Two gigantic empty tanks are above P.A.’s main room, remnants of a former mayonnaise factory that housed itself here. For a few months our engineers experimented with the tanks as natural reverb chambers, and we’ve been psyched and waiting to use them for performances and installations.

We debuted them this past week with Is Upstairs and invited a few of our favorite BK experimental artists to come play. Check out more pics / deets of what went down over at the LQQK Blog.

This weekend Meanred and the BEMF team descends on Williamsburg with the sole intent of soaking dancefloors from Glasslands to BK Bowl, with many others in between. P.A. is finally able to announce their line-up for the fest, and brace yourselves, because it’s cray.

Detroit legend Omar-S returns to P.A. to headline Friday after a decimating set this summer at Bunker. He’s joined in the Front Stage by Numbers men Jackmaster and Deadboy. The Back Stage will feature special live sets by Onra and DTL as well as local faces Nick Catchdubs and Matt Shadetek.

Saturday will be headlined by the superb Shlohmo. After thoroughly impressing the scene with some very original releases, he’s had a wave of undeniable gigantic hip-hop and R&B remixes we suggest you look into. Up and comers Salva and Groundislava will also be hitting the Front Stage, while the Back Stage sees a takeover by our friends in Mixpak.

Need more to make a decision? Check out the official BEMF Spotify playlist.

The highlight of CMJ for us, coming as no big surprise, were grindcore legends Pig Destroyer. Scott, JR and the boys don’t play live too often, but their new album Book Burner inspired a string of dates we were lucky enough to get in on it. It was the biggest metal showcase of the fest, and their set was the fastest, most furious we’ve seen in a while. Crowd energy was at an all time high with plenty of hair and horns in the air, and the most stage-diving / crowd surfing crowd we’ve seen since we hosted Iceage’s U.S. debut last Northside Fest. You know it’s serious when even staff can’t stop headbanging [we looking at you Mikey].

Metal Injection who co-presented the showcase with MetalSucks and 1000 Knives was on hand and captured the whole set in video. Re-live it below along with setlist.

One of our unexpected surprises this CMJ was Georgia rockers Twin Tigers. As a last minute addition to the Panache Supershow [replacing Xray Eyeballs on the bill], they brought a hypnotic moody vibe to the back room that was a definite stand-out. Their new album Deathwish will be out soon, but for now check out some of their older tracks below. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, these guys are on to something.

Sub Pop signees Metzgarnered a lot of attention this CMJ. We are happy to say that we were able to host them at P.A. and see firsthand that the buzz is indeed warranted. The boys hit the stage with a fury that went largely unparalleled for the entirety of the fest. Their noise rock attack recalled pioneers like Shellac, and even some newer groups like KEN Mode, who played P.A. just a few days before [hint: they are a metal band]

If you weren’t able to experience it, the vid below by UARTIGNYC comes highly recommended.

CMJ can be a tough one. Shows stacked on top of shows. Late nights, and early days. NYC based FIGO who had played the back room last July with Hussle Club had an early slot at one of our Brooklynvegan day shows. They hit the stage at 1pm as the crowd was starting to trickle in, and their energy and volume was exactly what a band needs to deliver to stand out in a fest like CMJ. Their propulsive electronic brand of rock n roll ala The Death Set got Williamsburg nice and warmed up for another non-stop day of raging, assisting Mercy even. They were also a tough act to follow.
