Silver Apples are an American psychedelic electronic music duo from New York, composed of Simeon Coxe III, who performs as Simeon, on a primitive synthesizer of his own devising (also named The Simeon), and until his death in 2005, drummer Danny Taylor. The group was active between 1967 and 1969, before reforming in the mid 1990s. They were one of the first groups to employ electronic music techniques extensively within a rock idiom, and their minimalistic style, with its pulsing, driving beat and frequently discordant modality, anticipated not only the experimental electronic music and krautrock of the 1970s, but also underground dance music and indie rock of the 1990s. In September 2007 Simeon went on tour for the first time in years, performing as a solo version of the Silver Apples. Silver Apples / Simeon performed at, among others, All Tomorrow's Parties (Minehead, UK, December 2007); Electric Picnic, Stradbally, Ireland (September 2008); All Tomorrow's Parties, Australia (January 2009), and last year at Public Assembly!
Xeno and Oaklander are a minimal electronics girl/boy duo, and they are based in Brooklyn, NY. They began writing music and soundtracks in 2004. Miss Liz Wendelbo is French / Norwegian and Sean McBride is from Maryland. They record their songs live in their Brooklyn studio and play analogue synthesizers and instruments exclusively. They have toured Europe and the US numerous times, and they play extensively in New York in music venues, lofts and festivals. They have also performed at SF Moma, PS1 Warm Up, Miami Art Basel, the Zürich Kunsthalle and the New Museum in New York. Sean McBride has created original music for artists Annika Larsson, Jonah Freeman, Annee Olofsson and Dara Birnbaum. Xeno & Oaklander have recently scored a soundtrack for artist Fabian Marti. Their latest Remix is for British legend John Foxx and the Maths.
John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions) is a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and writer who is perhaps best known as the drummer for Oneida. Man Forever, his vehicle for exploring the outer limits of drum performance, was created to overwhelm, to investigate the nuances that bloom in the midst of repetitive music, and to act as a pure sound experience. Past performances have included Brian Chase (Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs), James McNew (Yo La Tengo), Chris Baio (Vampire Weekend), Richard Hoffman (Sightings), Shahin Motia (Oneida, Ex Models), Sarah Richardson (Creeping Nobodies), Ryan Sawyer (Stars Like Fleas), Greg Fox (Liturgy, Guardian Alien), Christopher Weingarten (Parts and Labor), and many others.
La Big Vic bring a few different worlds together on their debut album, and a lot of that can be attributed to each member's background. Keyboardist Peter Pearson has served as an apprentice under Pink Floyd's live sound producer. Before guitarist Toshio Masuda moved from Japan to America, he produced hip-hop, commercials, and soundtracks, and even performed with a boy band. Violinist and lead singer Emilie Friedlander founded the blog Visitation Rites and is currently the editor of Pitchfork's sister site Altered Zones.
