Instrumental extreme jazz/fusion/whatever metal has been on a bit of a rise as of
late over the last several years, especially in this day in age with the plethora of
bands trying to display their musical fortitude and trying to outdo one another
in such a feeble rat race. Brooklyn, NY’s DYSRHYTHMIA are pretty much
the pioneers and innovators of the new wave of said instrumental movement
within extreme metal, forming over ten years ago when not a lot of bands were
even coming close to doing what DYSRHYTHMIA did. Hence it would be
forward-thinking metal label Relapse Records who would take notice and
would help bring awareness to the three-piece (that of accomplished guitarist/
artist Kevin Hufnagel/also of Gorguts, bassist Colin Marston/also of Krallice/
Gorguts/…Behold The Arctopus, and drummer Jeff Eber) over a series of three
full-length albums and countless live shows (DYSRHYTHMIA being one of
the best live bands one can ever witness). During said tenure, the band would
immediately gain the attention of a pretty wide-array of listeners within the
extreme metal crowd and the music nerd crowd respectively.
The new DYSRHYTHMIA album “Test Of Submission” emerges as
the darkest, most intense, and ultimately best DYSRHYTHMIA album to surface
from the band’s storied career.

Instru-metal/progressive act Loincloth formed following the demise of Raleigh, North Carolina-based death/doom act Confessor. Confessors' drummer Steve Shelton and guitarist Cary Rowells were recruited by Richmond, Virginia-area guitarists Tannon Penland (Kenmores, Koszonom) and Pen Rollings (Breadwinner, Honor Role, Butterglove). The Loincloth lineup was now fully realized, and the math madness began to unfold. The idea behind the formation of Loincloth was to create a band that focused only on the things that made the members’ favorite form of music inspiring and powerful, steering clear of cliché formulas. Loincloth choose instead to carve its name out of sheer force of will. Punishing riffs and a mean rhythm section were all they were interested in; no acoustic parts, no pointless leads, no repetition and most importantly NO VOCALS! To them, metal was getting punched in the face by sinister riffs while a tight rhythm section kicked them with counter-beats to the gut!
In a time when the music industry is highly over saturated, it's rare when artists genuinely strive to create something different from the norms of their genre. Rivers of Nihil, a Reading PA based 5 piece, has been doing just that. Forming out of previous bands and local comradery, Jake,Brody,Jon,Biggs and Ron are on a relentless path of taking things to the next level. In the less than year they've been together, they've recorded an EP titled "hierarchy" with producer Carson Slovak, which has been getting a ton of buzz in the online community and local music press. This band is pushing to break boundaries and to bring their music to as many people as possible
