Cheeky, charming and touchingly direct, Melbourne foursome Twerps are rising from humble beginnings to become international lo-fi pop champions. Formed in late 2008 around charismatic guitarist/vocalist Marty Frawley, Twerps were already supporting the likes of Deerhunter, the Bats (NZ), the Black Lips, Yo La Tengo and Thee Oh Sees within a few months of their first gig.

Their debut EP, released on Chapter Music in late 2009, featured nine short, simple but incredibly infectious tracks, recorded by Eddy Current Suppression Ring/Total Control guitarist Mikey Young. These tracks were also released on cassette by US label Night People (Wet Hair, Peaking Lights). On the basis of this EP, Twerps began to filter out into the world, and were called “the best new band in Australia” by iconic UK magazine Uncut. More US labels came calling, and Twerps eventually released singles in early 2011 on Underwater Peoples (Mountain Man, Real Estate) and Group Tightener (Best Coast, Cloud Nothings). They also took off on their first US tour that March, a six week cross-country odyssey that saw them shine at SXSW, head through the midwest with Wet Hair, and pack out a New York show with Big Troubles.

“Dave, tell ‘em about your wrestling record”

“Three wins, sixteen defeats. Beat the same kid twice. Lost to the state champion in six seconds”

Clearly, the Turbo Fruits are not athletes. They are, however, a rock n roll band and one that could likely take your state rock & roll champion to the mat in less time than it takes to cue up a record. What the Nashville, Tennessee quartet lack in physical adeptness they make up for in wild abandon and unfettered debauchery; in buzzsaw guitars and pummeling, primal rhythms. And they STILL look good in a unitard and head gear. Okay, that might not be true – we haven’t tested that theory yet, there wasn’t quite enough beer, there may never be enough beer – but they are definitely one of the most visceral rock groups in America, as is evidenced on their new album Butter.

From the band’s inception, Violent Bullshit had its priorities straight. With seasoned veterans hailing from Les Savy Fav, Orchid, Panthers, Battery, Halfman, and Black Army Jacket, they began by playing classic hardcore strictly for the fun of playing; the only priority was having a good time. Throughout the last few years of playing raucous basement shows and small venues in Brooklyn and New York City, they’ve evolved from a loose off the cuff style into a tight amalgam of hard-core that honors the classics while still pushing the genre forward. These five guys have been playing in bands all their lives and have now returned to the music they’ve loved. The result has been a long string of intensely fun, and occasion-ally legendary, live shows which have left everyone within earshot a converted fan.

Although the Magnolia Housing Projects have long been demolished, a light post still stands at the corner where youth like Vockah Redu (Javocca Davis) gathered to rap and create beats. The light post marks one of the birthplaces of Bounce music, a genre of rap specific to New Orleans that has invigorated crowds throughout the South. Vockah Redu and the Cru animate the stage with their dynamic revival of dance, music, and art from the street corner to the club. More than your typical hip-hop act, this theatrical performance sets the stage for a sweaty hands down booty up good time, transforming any party, bar, or dance floor in your neighborhood.

Xray Eyeballs is the brainchild of O.J. Felipe originally from San Francisco, but after numerous cross-country adventures, he landed himself in Brooklyn around 2000. Upon settling here, O.J. quickly cemented himself in the underground Brooklyn punk, noise, and indie scene playing in numerous bands.
